AIDS Delaware receives a $25,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation

Wilmington, DE – December 13, 2016 – AIDS Delaware is the recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program. The funds will support AIDS Delaware’s education program, ‘Do The Right Thing 4Life’ (DTRT4L). This program targets the African-American community and enlists the help of over 30 local barbershops and beauty salons to deliver HIV education and prevention messages to their clients and the local community. AIDS Delaware is a first-time recipient of this grant.

Delaware’s HIV epidemic disproportionately affects the African-American population which comprises 21% of Delaware’s population, but accounts for 61% and 67% of the State’s HIV and stage 3 (AIDS) cases, respectively.

The barbershop and beauty salon owners provide informal, one-on-one HIV education and prevention messages which include: encouraging and endorsing healthy behaviors; dispelling myths about HIV/AIDS; distributing condoms; and discussion of risk reduction methods. DTRT4L has been going strong for 16 years.

Each year AIDS Delaware recognizes and celebrates the shop and salon owners at the DTRT4L Banquet which will be held on February 11, 2017 at the Waterfall Catering & Special Events Facility, 3416 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE. For more information, call Frank Hawkins at 302.652.6776.
